Navicons Gone Mad

We are all familiar with the Navicon, it’s the symbol representing a collapsed menu on the mobile view of a website.

Unfortunately, use of Navicons has gone mad. I am now seeing them on desktop websites.

I think this comes from the new trend of keeping website design super minimal. But in this case I think it’s too simple and has actually become harmful. Firstly it blocks branding. If you really want to know what this site has to offer you now need to click on the Navicon. Will you do this or just leave the site?

If you really want to be cool, leave the Navicon there but remember whether the user has collapsed it between pages and site visits. That way the user gets what they want, not what you want. Isn’t that a better approach?
